Individual Details
Emily Mary Fitten
(9 Feb 1823 - 20 Sep 1898)
Mrs. Emily Margaret Kerr, daughter of Col. John Fitten, wife of B. F. Kerr, Esq., was born Feb. 7th, 1823 [sic Feb. 9, 1823]; was married Sept. 5th, 1858 [sic 1853]; spent the greater part of her life in Chambers County, Ala., and departed this life, Sept. 22nd, 1898 [sic Sept. 20, 1898], in the seventy-fifth year of her age, near the old homestead, and was interred at New Harmony Church, where it was her custom to worship God. No one who is competent to appreciate true worth could fail to esteem her. Her frankness made it easy to form her acquaintance.
Her genial disposition made her companionship pleasing and agreeable. Her strength of character was a contradiction to the adage – “Once a man, a twice a child,” for when well, she was lively, cheerfully and helpful, and she new how to paint the silver lining upon the cloud of sorrow. One of her marked characteristics was freedom from selfishness. Even her own personal cares, trials and infirmities were communicated to but few of her friends. She loved the worship of God and the preacher in the pulpit, could catch an inspiration from the expression, which glowed upon her earnest, honest face.
Her end was peace. While passing across the valley through which the Jordan of death flows, she spoke of loved ones who had gone before, and saw the messengers, invisible to mortals.
Surely she has gone to live with God, in the Mansion of light, and to praise her Lord in the City which has foundation, whose marker and builder is God; where no more sad partings are, and no more sad farewells are said, there to wait ‘til her surviving loved ones greet her on the shining shore.
