Individual Details
Mildred Katherine Moulton
(7 Jan 1917 - 15 Dec 1996)
Catherine M. Fuessel, 79, a lover of beano and a former school custodian, died Sunday at the Barron Center.
Mrs. Fuessel usually played beano three times a week, said her daughter, Betty Lou Fuessel. "She liked it because she got to meet a lot of people. It was a night out."
She played regularly at Yankee Bingo at Morrill's Corner, and before that she went to beano games at the Italian Heritage Center and St. Pius X Church. Her daughter said she was a skilled and somewhat lucky beano player who once won $1,100 in a single night.
As a young woman, Mrs. Fuessel sewed dresses at the former Lerman's dress factory in downtown Portland. Later she was a custodian for 11 years at the former Emerson School on Munjoy Hill, North School and at King Junior High School.
Mrs. Fuessel had only recently become acquainted with a daughter she gave up for adoption 51 years ago, Kathleen Morcillo of St. Petersburg, Fla.
"We just met her in August after 51 years," said Betty Lou Fuessel. "My mother had her at 28, and back in those days, when you were single, you didn't keep your baby. Her father made her give her up for adoption. He was a very strict man."
Morcillo found her birth mother through records in the Portland Public Library. Mrs. Fuessel never knew what became of her after the adoption, said Betty Lou Fuessel. "She wondered that all her life."
At age 38, she married Junior Everett Fuessel, and they had two daughters. She lived on Munjoy Hill for 15 years, and then on Montrose Avenue for 15 years before moving to Rosemont Avenue a couple of years ago.
Mrs. Fuessel enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. "Everywhere I took the kids, Mom went with us," said Betty Lou Fuessel, speaking of her sister, Linda Quimby's four children."She came with us to the beach, to fairs, apple picking, everywhere."
Born in Portland, a daughter of Louis and Pamela Nadeau Moulton, she attended local schools. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church.
Mr. Fuessel died in 1984.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda Quimby of Standish, Betty Lou Fuessel of Bar Mills and Kathleen Morcillo of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three brothers, Amile and Philip Moulton, both of Gorham, and Joseph Moulton of South Portland; seven sisters, Rose Viscone, Mary Landry and Gladys DiFazio, all of Portland, Arlene Stence of Manchester, Conn., Marjorie Bagdis of Southington, Conn., Dorothy Hayes of Westbrook, and Lorraine Wing of Auburn; and four grandchildren.
Prayers will be recited at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Chapel B of the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church. Burial will follow at Forest City Cemetery, South Portland.
