MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Robert Arnold Sanders, 84, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, March 12, 2005, at his home.
Born April 30, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Walter Fairweather and Gladys Kimball Sanders.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 51 years, Ruth Young Sanders.
He was a 1939 graduate of Jamaica (N.Y.) High School and attended Syracuse University, studying business administration and law.
He retired in 1984 from Corning Glass Works in Martinsburg, after 40 years of service. He had been manager of manufacturing.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He received two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart, among other medals.
He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where he was a member of and served in leadership roles including Vestry, Budget Committee chairman and Search Committee chairman.
He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, a volunteer at Kings Daughter's Hospital, director emeritus of BB&T and a member of West Virginia State Chamber of Commerce, among other organizations. He served on the mayor's advisory committee.
He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award in 1969 for distinguished service to the Boy Scouts of America, was named a Paul Harris Fellow with the Rotary Club of Martinsburg and received the Presidential Commendation by President of the United States Jimmy Carter, among other awards.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Spear Sanders; one daughter, Ruthie S. Haden of Inwood, W.Va.; two sons, Kenneth L. Sanders of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Robert A. Sanders Jr. of Martinsburg; one stepdaughter, Loraine Spear-Gonnie; two stepsons, Andrew Spear and Bill Spear; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church. The Rev. Paradine will officiate.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 W. King St., Martinsburg, WV 25401.
