Individual Details

Alice B. Wilson

(19 Dec 1874 - 20 Feb 1973)

"Alice lived well into her nineties," according to William Spear. "Alice Wilson grew up in Fremont... Alice appears to have been slightly cross eyed? And in those days that amounted to a serious handicap..she was thus the  “maiden aunt” as was sometimes said of unmarried female family members back in the day...as a kid all I remember was that she was in some sort of remote facility..akin to a retirement home...could of been Oregon but I want to say Montana? Teacher of Truth? Hmmm. Sounds more like my sister. ...anyway, unmarried, lucid and friendly enough but no one paid much attention to her...almost as if she was kind of warehoused, but in a humane fashion? Maybe she was unbalanced in someway?"

Evidence has come to light that Alice was living with her cousin, Annie L. Beermaker, who had married James Abraham Leiter on 14 May 1883 in Saunders County, Nebraska. Annie was a daughter of Rebecca A.Wilson and John Beermaker, and Rebecca was a daughter of our common ancestors, Thomas and Jane Wilson of Yelvertoft, Northamptonshire, England, who had immigrated to Lorain County, Ohio, in 1830.
Alice B. Wilson and her cousin, Annie L. Leiter, appear together in the 1910 and 1920 census records of Spokane, Washington. Mr. Leiter is working in a hardware store, and Alice is working in a dry goods store. If this is our Alice B.Wilson from Nebraska, then she remained in Spokane, where in 1930 she was working as a clerk for the railroad, and it is probably her living in Eugene, Lane County, Oregon in 1940 claiming to be a “truth teacher.” She died 20 Feb 1973 in Lane County, Oregon, at the age of 98. The death record states that this Alice Wilson was born 19 Dec 1874.
This evidence fits well with other facts that are already known about the family and also reveals more about Rebecca Wilson and her descendants.
