SANTA FE - Mrs. Gertrude J. Calvert passed from this life Saturday afternoon, May 7, 2011, at her home.
Born October 28, 1914 in Arcadia, Mrs. Calvert had spent her entire life in Arcadia. She worked side by side with her husband, Harold A. "Happy" Calvert, in the operation of their dairy farm from 1948 – 1971 and enjoyed crocheting, knitting, tending her fruit and vegetable garden and attending church at Arcadia First Baptist Church, where she had been a longtime member.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her 5 siblings and her son, Chester Lynn Alvers.
Survivors include her sons, Sydney Alvers (LuLu) of Nacogdoches, Richard Alvers (Sandra); daughters, Irene Nelson (William), Karen Wilson Carnley (Daniel), all of Santa Fe; 15 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Arcadia First Baptist Church, Dr. Rick Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Hayes Grace Memorial Park under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home.
Casketbearers will be Billy Alvers, Sydney Alvers, Ben Anderson, Aaron Nelson, Lance Nelson and Joe Reese. Honorary bearers will be Darrell Hingle and Danny Sharp.
Visitation with the family will be 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 10412 Highway 6, (409) 925-3501.
Those who wish to honor Mrs. Calvert's memory may consider donations to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Houston Solari Hospice Care for the love and care they provided to Mrs. Calvert during her final days.
