Thomas Wilson sailed from Liverpool aboard the ship Caledonia and arrived in the port of New York on 19 April 1830 together with his brother, John, his wife, Jane, and two small children, Ann and William Slater Wilson. Thomas' occupation was listed as "malster" [maltster], a person who works or trades in malt as part of the brewing process.The ship Caledonia, James Rogers, master, was advertised in the New York Morning Courrier in 1830 as sailing on the 1st and 16th of every month to Liverpool. The price of a cabin was 30 guineas.
