Helen Martha Hall
(13 Nov 1917 - 4 Mar 2011)
Martha Hall Thomas, 93, of Austin, TX and Horseshoe Bay, TX died peacefully at her residence in the Plaza at Querencia Barton Creek, Austin, TX on March 4, 2011. Born November 13, 1917 in Nelsonville, Ohio, she was the second child of the late Herman A. and Helen Gertz Hall. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, John F. Thomas MD, her brother Richard A. Hall and her sister Marion Hall Mitchell.
Martha graduated from Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania. She was working in a laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania when she met the dashing young medical student, John Thomas from Austin who was captured by Martha's beauty and zest for life. Martha and John married June 21, 1941, and together they had 5 children. Following WW II and Dr. Thomas' surgery fellowship, the family settled back into life in Austin, TX.
Life with 5 children only 8 years apart was busy for Martha as homemaker. Besides all the children's activities, she was involved with the Junior League of Austin, The Settlement Club of Austin, ice skating and sewing circles. When she and Dr. Thomas moved to Horseshoe Bay, TX, she became involved with The Little Theater of Horseshoe Bay, Horseshoe Bay Garden Club, Marble Falls Library and The Crisis Center of Marble Falls. She became an avid bridge player late in life.
Martha and John spent many weekends at the TP Ranch with family and friends. Martha loved the Texas Hill Country and enjoyed all the wildflowers and songbirds that resided there. Called "Mammer" by her 11 grandchildren, they loved the summers and holidays at the TP when each meal ended with John saying "It is all good Martha".
Always the life of the party, Martha and John enjoyed dancing together, especially to the circle of onlookers when they danced the polka. Martha thrilled her friends with creative costumes for Halloween and other party occasions. She and John traveled the world learning about the different breeds of cattle. The proudest accomplishment for Martha Thomas was that all of her 5 children graduated from The University of Texas at Austin.
Her children include Mary Helen Thomas Davenport and husband Claude J. Davenport III, Houston, TX, John Hall Thomas, Van Horn, TX, Susan Thomas Jastrow and husband Kenneth M. Jastrow II, Round Mountain, TX, Sarah Fulton Thomas, Round Mountain, TX, James William Thomas and wife Tina Cordes-Thomas, Cedar Park, TX.
