Stancel Oscar "Slim" Bassett, 64, died Thursday at his home.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Southside Church of God, 2826 Barrow, with the Revs. Danny Thompson and George Ivy officiating, directed by North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange. Burial will be at a later date in Rocky Hills Cemetery in Sebastopol, Miss., directed by Stephens Funeral Home of Union, Miss.
Mr. Bassett was born in Mississippi, where he grew up, and married Marjorie Archer in 1955 in Abilene. He moved to Abilene in 1955 and worked as an oilfield driller for 26 years until retiring in 1976. He was a member of Southside Church of God.
Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; two daughters, LaVoyd "Linnie" Davis of Cyril, Okla., and Nellie Utley of Arlington; his mother, Nellie Bassett of Sebastopol, Miss.; two brothers, Henry Bassett of Sebastopol, Miss., and Dorman Bassett of Mesquite; six sisters, Delma Bassett of Portland, Ore., Mary Brown of Theodore, Ala., Yvonne Beckham of Meridian, Miss., Jo Lewis of Enterprise, Miss., Martha Foreana of Rose Hill, Miss., and Mildred Tatum of Sebastopol, Miss.; and one grandchild.
