Venerable Minister Passes Away After Long Illness
He was 79 Years of Age, and Was One of the Oldest and Best Known Methodist Preachers in Alabama
Seale, Ala., May 16 - Rev. John Wesley Solomon, who has been failing in health for a year, died at his home near Seale at about 4 o'clock this morning. His condition has been very critical for several days; he being extremely weak and unconscious most of the time. During all these months he has suffered much. Bronchitis of long standing, complicated with other affections due to old age and a general going away of physical strength, was the cause of death.
Rev. Emmie W. Solomon, of Texas, arrived a few days ago in response to information of his father's extreme illness, also Mr. Henry Solomon, of Troy, Ala., and other members of the family.
For many years Rev. J. W. Solomon has lived near and in Seale. Some of the time he lived at Villula, where he was pastor of the Methodist church for years. No man waw better known in this part of the state, and for more than 30 years he has been a prominent figure in this locality. In his prime he was noted for his eloquence in the pulpit; being of strong convictions, very earnest, broad-minded and liberal, he preached with great vigor and success. More than once he was invited by city churches, but he always preferred to stay with those in the country. Mr. Solomon was a man of superior intellectual brightness and quickness, and his views were treated with respect. He had nearly reached the age of 80 years. Besides his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Solomon, he leaves the following children: Rev. Emmett W. and Miss Corinne Solomon, of Texas; Messrs. Henry L. Solomon, of Troy, William Solomon of Dothan, Thomas Solomon, of Florida, Mrs. W. Pitts of Pittsboro, and Messrs. James W. and Frank N. Solomon, of Seale.
The burial will take place at the cemetery at Seale tomorrow morning.
