Carol Lou Conklin

Carol (Conklin) McNaughton was born in Lansing, Michigan 22 January 1935, the third of three daughters born to the late Carlton and Alberta (Hilton) Conklin. She died at home in Middletown 15 March 2010 at the age of 75. Following commencement from Michigan State University in 1957, she moved to California, teaching third grade in San Diego. In 1958 she was married to Robert McNaughton in Lansing and they moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she taught second grade in Skokie. In 1959 they moved to Duluth, Minnesota, where a son, Timothy, was born. They then returned to Chicago, where she again taught second and third grade in Skokie. Following seminary education, they moved to Orange, Massachusetts in 1962, where a second son, Brian, was born. Here she taught second grade. Moving to South Plainfield, New Jersey in 1966, two daughters, Susan and Ann, were born. Carol became the founding Director and head teacher of a churchsponsored preschool program. In 1973 the family moved to Cromwell, Connecticut. There she became a parttime teacher at The Learning Center of a residential treatment center for neglected and abused children. She then earned an MS degree at Central Connecticut State University in 1982, and was a Special Education Teacher and Educational Diagnostician until her retirement in 1996. Throughout her life she taught Sunday school classes, served on Boards of Christian Education and as Sunday School Superintendent, sang in church choirs, taught confirmation classes, and served on the Board of Directors for Hilltop Day Care program. She read widely, and was an active participant in book groups. A creative seamstress, she made many items for her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren, until just two weeks prior to her death. Besides her husband, Carol is survived by her sister and brotherinlaw, four children and their spouses, nine grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A service for the celebration of her life will be held at the Hilltop Covenant Church, corner of West Street and Hicksville Road in Cromwell at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 20th.
