Allen R. Smith Feb. 2, 1949 - Sept. 21, 2015 EDWARDSBURG - Allen Ray Smith, 66 years old of Edwardsburg, unexpectedly passed to his rest on Sept. 21, 2015, in the Emergency Room of Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital of Dowagiac. He was born Feb. 2, 1949, in Dowagiac, the son of Ray B. and Barbara Jean (Schmidtendorff) Smith, and had lived in Cass County many years, graduating from Edwardsburg High School. Al enjoyed his work repairing small engines, working for Cassopolis Outdoor Power and then H.E. Long & Sons of Adamsville, where he retired. He was a former member of the Sons of the American Legion, Post 365, Edwardsburg. One of his favorite sports was deer hunting and hunting for mushrooms. Another outdoor activity he enjoyed was fishing in the local lakes, especially for Walleye in Lake Erie. Al was married June 16, 1984, in Edwardsburg, to Carolyn (Valentine) Rickey, and she survives with his daughter, Diana (Nick) Santos of Elkhart; and Carolyn's children, Alisa (Larry) Haynor of PawPaw, Jerilynn Rickey of Cassopolis, Theresa Rickey of Elkhart and John Rickey of Elkhart. There are 10 grandchildren; a sister, Carol (Charles) Kantz of Cassopolis; and three brothers, David Lee (Debra) Smith of Elkhart, Gregory Dean Smith of Niles and Mike Fred Smith of Cassopolis. Family and friends may gather on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015, from 2-5 PM at the Edwardsburg American Legion Post 365, 25751 US-12 East, Edwards-burg, where all may visit and socialize, remembering Al. There will be a luncheon buffet for all who stop to pay their respects and to remember. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to the Van Buren County Youth Camp, 12370 45th St., Bloomingdale, MI 49026, or to the family to offset the cost of the funeral. Arrangements are by the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, Edwardsburg, MI.
