On Memorial Day, May 30, 1944, "AJ" Smith of Cassopolis MI was inducted into the United States Navy. Ten months latter he died from wounds suffered when his ship, LSM (R) 188 ( a ship so small it was not even given a name) was struck by a Kamikaze plane. He was 20 years old.Endnotes
