Allie Josephine Meagher Lee, age 100, passed away peacefully at her daughter's home in Mobile on Monday, January 11, 2010 where she had been living for the past 7.5 years. S
he was born to James Garfield Meagher and Mary Frances Thomas Meagher on August 8, 1909 in Sayreton, Alabama. She grew up in Sayreton where her father was Superintendent of Republic Steel's Alabama Coal Mining Operation. She attended schools in North Birmingham and graduated from Central Highschool in Birmingham. She married Alonzo "Lonnie" Hester Lee on June 7, 1930. She and Lonnie raised two children, Alonzo "Lonnie" Hester Lee, Jr. and Mary Nina, in Edgewood and then later moved to Mountain Brook where she lived for over 50 years. She was a past member of Sixth Avenue Presbyterian Church and was a member of General Sumter Daughters of the American Revolution. She was predeceased by her husband, Alonzo Hester Lee; her brother, Clyde Riley Meagher; her sisters, Thelma Frances Meagher and Mary James Meagher Newell; and her nephew, Alfred Turenne Newell, III. Mama Lee, as she was known by all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be remembered for her keen mind, strength of character, great sense of humor, and loyalty and commitment to family.
She is survived by her son, Alonzo Hester Lee, Jr. of Birmingham; her daughter, Mary Nina Lee Marriott (Sheldon) of Mobile; 8 grandchildren, Kimberly Lee Bean (Nelson), Blanchard Sheldon Marriott, Jr. (Nancy), Lucie Lee Haynes (Brad), and James Leslie Marriott all of Mobile; Braxton Chapman Lee, Meagher Lee Whigham (Wagon), and Lee Marriott Burmeister (Josh) all of Mobile; and Helen Lee Hyde (Cabot) of Nashville, TN; 16 great-grandchildren; and nephew, Clyde Riley Meagher of Tucker, GA.
Graveside service will be held Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 2:00pm at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham with the Rev. Sam Williamson officiating and a Memorial Service will be held on Monday, January 18, 2010 at 1:00pm at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Mobile. In lieu of flowers, donations to be made to The Mulherin Custodial Home, 2496 Halls Mill Rd, Mobile, Alabama 36606 or charity of your choice. Arrangements by Johns-Ridout's Southside Chapel.
