SOUTH BEND - Vernon J. Carlin, 84, a lifelong resident of South Bend, passed away at 5:45 PM Saturday, January 17, 2015 at the Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center, South Bend.
Vernon was born on February 23, 1930 in South Bend, IN to the late Vernon H. and Frances J. (Streibel) Carlin. He is a graduate of James Whitcomb Riley High School, South Bend. Vernon proudly served our country in the Unites States Navy during the Korean War Conflict. While in the Navy, he served aboard the USS Shenandoah. Following his years in the Navy, he continued to serve our country in the United States Naval Reserves. Vernon was a past member of the VFW in New Carlisle. He worked at Bendix Corporation for many years before his retirement in 1986.
Vernon is survived by his sons, Donald Carlin of South Bend, Joseph Carlin of Niles, John (Debbie) Carlin of South Bend; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Kay (Wayne) Soule of Bremen; and brother, Richard Carlin of South Bend. His sister-in-law, Belinda Carlin preceded him in death in 2014
Funeral services for Vernon J. Carlin will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday, January 22, 2015 at Palmer Funeral Home - Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend, IN 46614, where friends may visit from 5PM Thursday until time of services. Military graveside services and burial will take place at 10:00 AM Friday, January 23rd at Lamb’s Settlement Cemetery, Miami Road, South Bend.
