Individual Details
Elizabeth Leona Abt
( - 27 May 2009)
Elizabeth Leona (Abt) Hardy, of 40 Broad Street, Hollis, NH, passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, following a lengthy illness. She was the wife of Elwin C. Hardy, of Hollis, NH
Elizabeth, and her husband, Elwin, their children and the Whittemore family, own and operate Brookdale Fruit Farm located in the center of Hollis, NH. The farm has been in continuous operation since 1847 and is a well known landmark in southern New Hampshire. The farm stand had been started by Elizabeth as a true roadside open-air market in front of her home at 40 Broad Street, Hollis, in 1953. Under her guidance, it grew to become a multi-faceted retail farm market and nursery at its present location opposite her home.
In addition, Elizabeth was very active in music and as a choral singer in the Nashua Symphony & Choral Society and rarely missed a performance, including international tours.
Her other interests included activities in the Hollis Women’s Club, the Hollis Garden Club and membership in the Congregational Church of Hollis. But her true passion perhaps was the family cottage located in Falmouth on Cape Cod. The cottage had been built by her parents in the early years of development on the Cape and was her haven away from the rigors of farm life. Elizabeth loved walking the beaches and collecting shells along the way.
In addition to her husband, Elwin, she is survived by her sons Richard A. Hardy and his partner Susan Bracci; Bruce H. Hardy and his wife Becky Hardy; and Charles “Chip” D. Hardy and his wife Leigh Hardy, all of Hollis, NH; grandchildren Cameron Hardy and his wife Nikki Hardy of Hollis, NH; Devon Hardy Coyne and her husband Mike Coyne of Sudbury, MA; Cristin Hardy Larson and her husband Eric Larson of Warwick, RI; Bruce W. Hardy and his wife Jodi Hardy of Philadelphia, PA; Trevor Hardy of Hollis, NH, and Tyler Hardy of Hollis, NH; great-grandchildren Siena Hardy and Quinn Hardy of Hollis, NH; Hollis Coyne and Owen Coyne of Sudbury, MA; and Eva Hardy and Stella Hardy of Philadelphia, PA; her brother and sister-in-law Dr. Donald Abt and Barbara Abt of Falmouth, MA; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Eleanor Hardy Whittemore and Frank Whittemore of Hollis, NH; Ruth Hardy Seifert and Frank Seifert of Pepperell, MA; Ernest Hardy and Jane Hardy of Ithaca, NY and Beverly Abt (wife of brother Edgar L. Abt, deceased) of Southport, CT; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome donations made in memory of Elizabeth to the Nashua Symphony and Choral Society, 6 Church St., Nashua, NH 03060 or the Boston Pops Orchestra.
Interment will be held at a later date.
Visiting Hours will be held at Davis Funeral Home, One Lock Street, Nashua on Friday from 5-8 P.M.
A Memorial Service will be held at The Congregational Church of Hollis (U.C.C.), 3 Monument Square, Hollis on Saturday at 2:00 P.M. with a reception to follow. Friends are invited to attend.
