Individual Details
Thomas Henry Jefferson
( - 5 Nov 1925)
Yes, Gillian is the daughter of Horace Bushby Jefferson & Ellen Keen.
Every family has some form of a skeleton, Gill’s was the name change, the whole family wasn’t aware of it, until I unearthed some years ago (early 2000’s) the possibility that Thomas actually was Joseph Bushby who deserted the army. His commanding officer held the name of Jefferson, I guess Joseph had a sense of humour.
Obviously it was an offence to go awol, complete with kit!
I believe that the death penalty could of been used if discovered, they shot WWI soldiers for it, sadly.
Half the family Joseph had with Agnes had the name of Bushby in the middle, I think this is when Thomas may of confessed to Agnes of his crime?
Sydney was the only child to assume the name of Bushby when he married, although it was never spoken of in Gill’s family as to why. The wonders of DNA, it has certainly proved the Bushby theory for sure.
Thomas aka Joseph Bushby, was in the merchant navy apparently & my understanding from Gill is that he served in WWI, although I’ve not discovered the documentation for this yet.
There was also an amnesty I heard somewhere, that all men who had committed a crime were pardoned if they joined up, I believe this was the case with Thomas. The war needed all men of all ages to do their bit.
I’m not related to Gill, although my husband is her son. I would request that this is kept private as Gill is still alive as is her husband & son.
Kind regards,
Judith (29 Sep 2023)

* The Newton named as Frederick's birthplace is presumably the parish of Newton-in-Cleveland in Guisbrough district, formerly part of the North Riding of Yorkshire. Alternatively it could be Newton under Roseberry, a village in the borough of Redcar and Cleveland and the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. It is an outlying village of Guisborough.
