NOTE: Joseph Carpenter is on record as having married a "Mrs. Mary Carpenter" on Feb 23,1681 at Swansea,MA. This type of reference usually implies marriage to a widow. Some have thought that she could be the Mary Tillinghast, daughter of Pardon Tillinghast and Sarah Butterworth Tillinghast, and that she would have therefore been a widow of Benjamin Carpenter when she married Joseph. However, Joseph and Mary had children born between 1683 and 1708, and Benjamin and his wife Mary had children born in the 1690s, so the overlapping children would eliminate this possibility. Further, Benjamin Carpenter did not die until Mar 3,1710/1, and his wife Mary survived him. In conclusion, the maiden name of Joseph's wife Mary is not known.
