Capt. Thomas Fiske

Thomas Fiske, youngest son of Phineas Fiske, of Wenham, was born in
England in 1632, was a freeman in 1661, and for over 40 years a citizen
of great influence in Wenham. He participated very largely in public
affairs and was repeatedly a represenative to the General Court. He died
in 1707, “the Patriarch of the town,” as he was called, being in his
seventy-sixth year.
All of his sons died young except the first, Thomas.
From the Judicial Court records of Essex County it is stated
that ” the wife of Thomas Fiske was presented for wearing a tiffany
hoode” and was sentenced to pay 10s fine and 2s 6pence fees to the court
in Oct 1652.
Thomas came with his father from England in his early youth. He was one of the prominent men of the town of Wenham. Was representative to the Great and General Court 1671-72-78-79-80-86-94-97.
He was captain of the Colony forces. He was foreman of the jury in that
sad case of Rebecca Nurse, when after a verdict of not guilty had been
given was prevailed on to convict by the wonderful perversity and
extraordinary ignorance of the court. He subsequently made a
confession.
For many years Thomas was in charge of the one public school
of Wenham. He was moderator of the town meetings, 1700-04 and 1705. He
served as town clerk from 1661 to 1694, over 33 years. In 1686 the town
instructed him to keep a record of births, marriages and deaths and he
began this registration.
Capt. Thomas Fiske of Wenham made his will 24 April 1705, and it was
proved 1 Sept. 1707 by all three of the witnesses, viz.: Jacob, James
Jr., and Hannah Brown, all of Ipswich, legatees. Wife Martha was to have
by contract when he married her 100 pounds in money in one year after his
decease; to have her wood from his land joining Pleasure Pond, &c. Son
Thomas Fiske had already received his double portion. The church in
Boston to which he belonged was to have five pounds in money. Son-in-law
John Perkins for his children should have two parcels in great meadow
that he already occupied, estimated to be about six acres. To Ann
Perkins five pounds. Grandson Andrew Dodge to have twenty pounds when he
became of age. Son-in-law John Dodge’s four children which he had by the
testator’s daughter, viz., Phineas, Amos, Martha and Elizabeth, three
pounds each. Daughters Sarah Dodge and Elizabeth Browne to have the
residue according to the appraisal of three disinterested men chosen by
son-in-law Josiah Dodge and Nathaniel Browne. The Executors of the will
were Thomas Fiske and son-in-law Nathaniel Browne.
He died 15 Aug. 1707 and is buried, as is his son Thomas, in the old
graveyard at Wenham, near the grave of Ruth, widow of Thomas White.

He was married to Joan WHITE about 1650 in Wenham, Essex Co., MA.(1032) Children were: Thomas FISKE, Mary FISKE, Josiah FISKE, Amos FISKE, Eleazer FISKE, Martha FISKE, Eleazer (2) FISKE, Sarah FISKE, Hannah FISKE, Elizabeth FISKE.
He was married to Martha FITCH on 14 May 1695 in Boston, , MA.(1033) He was engaged in Married by Rev. Charles Morton of Charlestown. (1034)
