George Washington "M. G. W." Stafford

(7 Jan 1829 - 9 Jan 1892)

From obituary in Postville Review 1/16/1892. In early life he moved with his parents, first to Michigan and then to Illinois. In 1850 he joined the rush for gold, and crossed the plains to California. Here he spent 18 years, sharing the varied experiences of the early gold seekers. He came to Postville in 1868. Four of his five children survived him. He had been an invalid since Sept. 1889, when the aneurysm of the aorta, from the effects of which he died, first appeared. He was an active and efficient member of the M. E. Church.

His older brother William B. Stafford joined him in the gold fields about 1861-62, and in 13 Nov 1864 he witnessed the wedding of his brother and Caroline Durham at Dayton, Nevada.
