Ellen Elizabeth McDowell was born near Ottowa, Ill., Jan. 27, 1860,and passed away at the family home, east of Kirkman, Jan. 13, 1938,aged 77 years, 11 months and 17 days.
She was the youngest daughter of Ole Larson and Inger Malinda Anderson. Their family consisted of five boys and three girls, all but two of whom were born in Norway. The family moved to Searsboro.
When Elizabeth was seven years old her mother died, after which shemade her home with her sister, Caroline.
On Jan. 18, 1881, she was united in marriage to John McDowell of Searsboro. Soon afterwards he brought his wife to Shelby county to the home he had prepared for her during the two previous years. This continued to be her home until she passed away 57 years later.
To this union nine children were born, three of whom died in infancy.
In the fall of 1906 all the family except the mother, was stricken with typhoid fever. A daughter, Margaret, passed away Oct. 13, and the father, Oct. 29.
After the death of her husband she continued to make her home with her children. She was especially interested in the home. In this community she was known as Aunt Lizzie.
She leaves to mourn her passing four sons and one daughter: Otto of Irwin, Kern of Brandon, Colo, Merle, Emery and Arlo of Kirkman; an aged sister, Mrs. Bertha Williams of Los Angeles, Calif.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held in the Kirkman M.E. church, Saturday at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. C. S. Dayhoff in charge. A men's quartette consisting of O. M. Hayward, M. G. Croft, Virgil Fiscus and A. O.Larson, accompanied by Nadine Mysent, furnished the music.
Pall bearers were H. S. Petersen, L. C. Croft, J. E. Anderson, M. G.and A. O. Larson and Fred Koenig. Interment was in Rose Hill cemeterybeside her husband and children.
Relatives from away who attended the funeral were the son, H. K.McDowell of Brandon, Calif., who will remain a few days; Mrs. Jesse McDowell, Pumey McDowell, Eldon McDowell and Arlie Binegar, all of Searsboro, who remained until Sunday, and Mrs. and Mrs. Ernest Greve of Omaha.

Note that in one place it says son Kern of Brandon, Colo. and in another H.K. of Brandon, Calif.
