William J. Harrison a resident of Porterville passed away there onThursday, October 4th. William was born in Chicago in August 1921. Hewas 86
Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM to 7:00 Pm on Wednesday, October10th at Myers Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 AM onThursday, October 11th at Hillcrest Memorial Park
His family moved to Boulder, CO in 1927 for better education andopportunities afforded citizens. Harrison matriculated through Boulderpublic schools and the University of CO.
He joined the Navy in 1942, spending four years in the Pacific areaaboard a rocket gunboat. After discharge, Mr. Harrison entered theautomobile business and later moved to San Bruno, CA in the samebusiness. William moved to Porterville where he and his partner werein business until 1959, when the business was sold. It was during thistime he met his loving wife, the former Evelyn Conner.
He came out of retirement to go to work for the State Hospital asSenior Psychiatric Technician and was assigned to the units for tenyears. The second ten years he constructed and directed Camp Vandalia,providing camping and recreation for all residents able toparticipate.
Mr. Harrison retired in 1983 from State Service after 20 years.
William is survived by his wife, Evelyn Harrison; one son, JefferyHarrison from a former marriage; four grandchildren; two sisters,Marian Dever of Estes park, CO, Martha McNary of Loveland, CO;thirteen nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sons, Tedand Lonnie Harrison.
William and Evelyn spent 20 years r-ving across the country andretired in 1999. In March 2008, they would have celebrated their 50thwedding anniversary.
