"I received a letter From Alta Mae Groshong (Mrs. Dean AlbertGroshong) of Cambridge, Nebraska on February 6, 1997 with thefollowing information on Zimri Groshong:
"Zinri (her spelling) Groshong was the father of (Martin) Ross, John,Nathan (Mason) and Jacob. Ross was a half brother to John, Nathan andJacob.
"Jacob was married to Alice Lucillia Drake, their sons were AlbertCleveland Groshong (born 20 Sept. 1887) and Alfred Grover Groshong(born 9 Sept. 1889). Jacob died 19 Sept 1889 and his wife, Alice,re-married to George Gipe and had one son, Guilford who died in 1925.
"Albert Groshong married Bessie Hazel Van Winkle and their family was:Vera May Groshong (born 8-22-1911, died 1992), Alice Leona (born2-28-1914, died 12-1991), Dale Vern Groshong (born 8-24-1921) and DeanAlbert (born 9-1-1929, died 1-12-1985). Albert died on Sept 1, 1926and Bessie died April 9, 1985.
"Alfred Groshong married Mabel Kiser and they had one son, Kenneth(born 1917). Alfred died February 6 1979. Albert lived in or aroundWoodruff, KS or Littleton, CO., then back to woodruff, KS. Alfredlived at Everett, Washington."
(3) Mary Sternberg responded to Ed Schwarze's information on August23, 2001:
"Thanks Ed. Zimri Groshong was married three times. My grandmother,Mary Groshong, was from his 3rd marriage. She was born in 1867 in MO.Never have found the name of her mother.
"Jacob, John and Nathan are from his 2nd marriage and her name wasMahala _____?
"His first wife was Malinda Reader. Martin Ross, Belinda, and Hannahwere from the first marriage. Martin Ross was born in 1836, 31 yearsbefore his half sister Mary."
(4) Another person sent a reply to the above information. His name isEugene Groshong Jr. and he wrote to Mary Sternberg on June 21, 2001and posted this information:
"I have some info and some doubts/suspicions. I am a descendant ofMartin Ross Groshong who I am told was the son of Zimiri or ZimirihGroshong.
"Research efforts show a Zimri Groshong born 1796 and a Zemiri/ZimiriGroshong born 1818, both the son of Jacob Groshong, Jr. and MaryMagdelena Kistler. Research shows Zimiri married to Malinda Readerborn 1820; another source shows her to be born in 1845. One sourceshows 3 marriages for Zimiri: a Mahala (no last name given), MalindaReader, and a Mary (no last name given) on 1 Oct 1885. Info showsZimri married to a Susie in 1866 in St. Joseph, MO.
"Most of the files I have found for Zimiri Groshong do not list MartinRoss among the children and differ with the info that I have beengiven from family. The undocumented family info that I have says thatMartin Ross, Ella (Belinda Ellen, married Henry Brooks), and Hannah(married Oliver Coats) were from Zimiri's first marriage; John, Jacob, and Nathan were from his second marriage; and there was a Susie fromhis third marriage.
"Martin Ross Groshong settled in Pottawattamie Co., IA., and wasmarried to Susan Osler from Maryland. The 1870 census lists him as aplasterer. I had been told that Zimiri was a stone mason, not apreacher or wagon maker, and the only Mormons that I heard about inthe family was a daughter of Martin Ross's who married a Mormon. Ofcourse, the area of IA that my family is from is where the Moromnsleft for Utah from.
"I'm just getting into this and that's about all I have right now. Ifyou want to know more about the descendants of Martin Ross Groshong, Ican tell you more later. If you find any more about Zimri in Nauvoo,I'd appreciate knowing what you find out."
