Individual Details

Joseph FRAZIER

(Bet 1791 and 1794 - 6 Nov 1874)

"Tax and Land Records, Vermilion County, State of Illinois", compiled by Charlotte A. Volkel, Lowell M. Volkel and James V. Gill., has the 1833 list, showing the date, original patentee, current owner and legal description. Joseph Frazier is listed as the current owner on two parcels in the same section, both were originally patented to John Starr on 12 Oct 1822. That supports the story in a history book that John Myers had traded his land in Ohio for land owned by Mr. Starr and that John later offered Joseph Frazier land if he would move to Vermilion County with John.

Served in War of 1812. Pvt in Capt. John Hamilton's Co, Ohio Military, Butler Co, OH, per R. Lyle Brown. Lyle also has this list of children:

If this is the correct Joseph, the census taker must have put both Joseph and Sarah in the wrong column.

Lyle says that Joseph's service record shows he married Sarah Myers in the autumn of 1808 at Rush Co., IN. Since Rush Co. did not yet exist then, probably was Fayette Co. He also says that in 1821 Joseph moved to Vermilion Co., IL, with his brother-in-law, John Myers. We also find Peter Frazier there. He (Joseph) subsequently moved to Coles Co.(later Douglas Co), IL and finally died in Guthrie Co., IA.
He quoted from an article in the Guthrie Co., Vedette, Panora, IA on 16 Sep 1869. Gave Joseph's birthplace as Hanover Co., VA in 1791. "While quite young, his father emigrated to the Northwestern territory and settled in what is now Rush Co., IN." Joseph grew up there. He met Sarah Myers, to whom he was married in about 1810. Soon after, they moved to Butler Co., OH, where he entered the service as a private in Capt. John Hamilton's company; the regiment was commanded by Col. Mills. Soon after the war he moved back to IN and remained there until 1837 when he moved to Vermillion Co., IL, where he lived until 1854. He sold out, came to Iowa and settled in Guthrie county, where he still resides.

Here is the full bio Lyle Brown has for Joseph:
"JOSEPH FRAZIER
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Joseph Frazier was born in Hanover Co, Virginia, 1790/93. The family later moved to Franklin Co, VA. From there to various places in Indiana, Ohio, Illinois and Iowa.

He enlisted in Capt. John Hamilton's Company, 1st Regiment Ohio Militia, Butler Co., OH Feb. 6, 1813 and served for six months being discharged at Camp Meigs, some 220 miles away. He was thus paid for 6 months & 14 days, the extra 14 days being travel allowance. His pay amounted to $8.00 per month. Henry Frazer (perhaps related) also served in this company.

According to his service record he married Sarah Myers in the autumn of 1808 at Rush Co., Indiana. Rush County, however, was unorganized Indian territory until 1822 so it is more likely he was married in Fayette County, perhaps in that area where Rush County now exists. He is listed in the 1820 census index as living in Fayette County near his brother, Peter Frazier.

In 1821 he moved to Vermilion County, Illinois with his brother-in-law, John Myers. We also find Peter Frazier there.

He subsequently moved to Coles County (later Douglas County) in Illinois and finally died in Guthrie Co., Iowa.

In March of 1826, Vermilon County was divided into two parts. A line being formed running east and west through the center of Congressional District # 18. All south of this line was called Carroll and all north was called Ripley. This was about 25 years before township organization and the reason for the division seems not to be known. The name Carroll was in honor of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was 90 years old at the time.

The first settlers in the Carroll division are supposed to be "Indian John" Myers who came in 1821. Joseph Frazier came with Myers, a brother-in-law. Myers and Simon Cox who came in 1822 built the first grist and saw mill about a mile south of Indianola. (Not much of a success).

A Mr. Helveston was the first man buried in Frazier Cemetery. He was killed at Hickory Grove by a falling tree. Unfortunately, no-one seems to know where Frazier Cemetery was. It may be what is now known as the Stunkard Cemetery.

GUTHRIE CO. VEDETTE, PANORA, IA 16 SEP. 1869

A correspondent furnishes a Des Moines paper with the following history of one of the remaining heros of the war of 1812, now a resident of this county:
Joseph Frazier was born in Hanover county, VA, in the year 1791. While quite young, his father emigrated to the Northwestern territory and settled down in what is now Rush county, Ind. Young Joseph here grew up to manhood. He made the acquaintance of a Sarah Myers, sister of John Myers, known as the "Indian fighter and scout." They were married about the year 1810. Soon after the Indians becoming troublesome, he removed to Butler county, O., where he entered the service as a private in Capt. John Hamilton's company; the regiment was commanded by Col. Mills. He was at Fort Meigs on the Maumee river, on May 1st, 1813, when Gen. Proctor at the head of 2000 British and Indians besieged the fort. Five days afterwards Gen. Clay came to the relief of the fort at the head of 1900 Kentuckians, who dispersed the besiegers, but a large body of his troups while engaged in the pursuit under Col Dudley were surrounded and captured. His time of service expired, he was discharged, and returned to his family in Butler county, Ohio. Soon after the war he moved back to Indiana, and remained there until 1837, when he moved to Vermillion county, Ill, where he lived until 1854. He sold out, came to Iowa, and settled in Guthrie county where he still resides, surrounded by a numerous family, a "hale, hearty, stout man," with plenty to make him and the old lady comfortable in their declining years. The strangest part of the old man's history is he still votes the so-called Democratic ticket."
