SAMUEL FLEENER was one of a large family of children who came to Sugar Creek township in 1851, and this has been the home of the family since that time. These brothers who came here at that time were John, Joseph, Michael, Pleasant and Samuel, our subject. Their father, Michael Fleener, came through the county prior to 1850 and entered land here. He did not settle here but died in Missouri soon afer entering the land here. In 1851 the widow and her family, consisting of five sons and six daughters, settled here. These daughters are Mrs. Andrew Mitchell, Mrs. Jerome English, Mrs. T.J. Myers, Mrs. Arthur Gosnell, Mrs. Allen Farmer. Clarinda died young.
Samuel Fleener was born in Brown county, Indiana, in 1831 and his wife was Amanda McFarland a native of Indiana, born in 1829. By their union nine children were born, six boys and three girls. One son, Joseph died at the age of 27 years and one son resides in New Sharon, the other four being residents of Sugar Creek township. Mr. Fleener at the time of his marriage settled in Sugar Creek township, purchasing 80 acres, and this he increased to 400 acres. Here he continued to reside through life, a respected citizen, a member of no church, yet with his means he contributed to all churches, and no stranger was ever turned away hungry from his door. He died in December, 1891, and his wife died in 1900.
