Leila "Lee" Elverda Lundberg was born June 25, 1932 on a farm nearWakeeney, Kansas to Fred & Helen Dietz. She was born into a LutheranFamily and was the youngest of four children. She had two sisters andone brother. Her parents rented the farm and had to sell the farmmachinery during the dust bowl years.
German was spoken in the home and her parents spoke German and Englishuntil they died. Lee's sisters and brother learned English in acountry school and taught Lee to speak English.
The family moved to Eaton, Colorado when Lee was 6 1/2 years old. Theymoved to Severance, Colorado when Lee was in the 2nd and 3rd grades.They went to church in Windsor, Colorado. They moved back to Eatonwhere Lee and her siblings graduated from Eaton High School. Duringher school years she played monopoly every afternoon with her friendJolene, and afterwards they went to a drugstore where her oldestsister, Elnora, worked and they would have sundaes. The sundaes werelarge and only cost a dime. Jolene and Lee went to the movies (25cents) three times a week. During High School, Lee worked at a DimeStore. She was also a cheerleader.
Her parents couldn't afford to send their children to college, so Leemoved to Greeley with her sister Issie and worked at Greeley DryGoods.
A friend, whose husband was a Sgt at the State Patrol, kept asking herto meet this guy who also worked at the State Patrol and Lee keptsaying she didn't go on blind dates. The friend kept asking her andshe finally relented. He picked Lee up for dinner. The guy happened tobe Len. Len took her back to her apartment and he realized he livedonly two doors away in Lee's landlady's house. He had a room there andworked on different shifts.
They were married at Our Saviors Lutheran Church on October 26, 1952.Lee got a job at a bank and after a year moved to another bank for oneyear. She ran bookkeeping machines at both banks.
In August 1956 they moved to Englewood, Colorado where Len had a jobwith Glenn L. Martin Co. which later became Martin Marietta, and isnow known as Lockheed Martin. They had an apartment behind SwedishSanitarium which became Swedish Hospital. They joined Grace LutheranChurch and attended there for 36 years. Lee played the piano forSunday School, taught Sunday School and also sang in the choir. Sheworked at a bank in Englewood for one year. They moved to Littletonand she worked there for one year as Assistant Head Bookkeeper. Leequit to have her children, Lori in 1959, Lon in 1962 and Lesli in1967.
She took a tailoring class and made coats and jackets for the girls,Lon and Len. She also worked part-time at the Wedding Belle doingalterations and making bridesmaid dresses. She also did sewing andalterations in her home and had many customers, and continued sewingfor her family and herself.
After Lesli went to school, Lee started working at Arapahoe ColoradoNational Bank in 1974. She was named an Officer of the bank and alsocontinued sewing during evening hours. Lee retired from the bank in1986. She was in banking for sixteen years.
They joined Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in April 1992. Lee was on theAltar Guild and Order of St. John until she had a bleeding stroke onOctober 27, 1999, possibly due to taking Vioxx for arthritis. She wasin ICU for 4 days and then had physical and speech therapy. Lee hadfourteen seizures after the stroke, which zapped her of her strength.She found a doctor that gave her medication that stopped the seizures.
She and her neighbor friend, Mary, learned to play Bridge in 1963. Shecontinued playing Bridge in three Bridge groups. Her parents playedPinochle and she learned that game when she was six and continuedplaying with Len, her parents and friends for many years. She alsoplayed canasta, yahtzee, tripoli, dominoes and Mah Jongg.
She made many friends. She loved to read, sew, do embroidery,candlewicking, counter cross-stitching and bowling. She also loved tobake desserts and for many years made about 14 different cookies and10 different candies at Christmas. Lee would pack 4" high by 10"square boxes with the goodies for Len's, Lori's, Lesli's and her ownwork places. She also did this for the bowling team and made platesfor friends, Altar Guild, and the church office. Every Christmas shebaked Jesus' birthday cake which was a red layered cake with creamcheese frosting.
She was a fan of college and NFL football games, especially theBroncos, CU, CSU and Air Force. For years she and Len had seasontickets for the Bronco games and would take turns with their children.After Len retired they cruised the Carribbean, took many trips in theUSA, including driving to Indiana and to South Carolina to visit herbrother Lefty and family and returned through southern states. Theydid this with sister Elnora and brother-in-law Carl. Also took tripsto Black Hills, North Dakota, New York Grand Central Station,Washington DC, Maryland, Branson, Washington State and ferried toBuchart Gardens and drove the coastline to California. They also did aten day land trip to Alaska and picked up a four day cruise to Canada.
She seldom missed church. She smiled a lot and loved to laugh and isknown for her sense of humor. She was a loving wife, mother andmother-in-law to daughters Lori and Lesli, and their spouses Neil andBrandon. She was a proud and loving "Nana" to Jade Zimmerman andLindsey and Preston Dumler.
She was preceded in death by son, Lon, who had just turned 19 when hedied. He died in 1981 after a six month battle with cardiomyopathywhich was a virus that attacked the heart muscle.
