Obituary for DEANE COWAN
Deane Cowan, 62, of Bozeman and former Livingston resident, died inBozeman late last week. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday,Feb. 28, at Livingston Christian Center on South Park Street acrossfrom County Market. The Rev. Duane Huie will officiate.
Arrangements are under the direction of Franzen-Davis Funeral Home inLivingston.
Deane was born Sept. 18, 1941, in Livingston, the daughter of RobertLee and Marjorie (Hughes) Cowan. She spent her early life and attendedschools in Park County, graduating from Park County High School in1959. She attended Montana State University, where she received abachelor's degree in education.
In 1962 she married Lyle A. Johnson. She was working as an elementaryteacher at Gardiner School when her husband, a U.S. Marine captain,was killed during the Vietnam War. She also taught at Mill Creek FlatSchool, now known as Arrowhead School, and at schools in Ennis and inthe Head Start program in Great Falls.
Deane married again and lived for a time in Germany with her husband.After returning to the United States she lived in Iowa beforereturning to Livingston, and then residing in Bozeman since themid-1980s. She and her second husband were later divorced.
Deane returned to MSU and in 1984 earned a master's degree incounseling with a specialty in marriage and family therapy. At thetime of her death she had a private practice.
She was an accomplished vocalist, once a performer with the VirginiaCity Players.
Deane touched the lives of many people through her counselingpractice. She loved animals, and she was an avid and skilledhorsewoman. She was a member of the American Quarter Horse and theAmerican Paint Horse associations, and various professional counselingassociations.
Survivors include a brother, Gary Cowan of Bozeman; sister, Lexi Marshand her husband, Jim of Livingston; nephew, Bill Cowan of Sacramento,Calif.; nieces, Laura Cowan-Biernacki and her husband, John and theirson, Michael of Cleveland, Ohio, Wendy Marsh Wood and her husband,Tyson and their daughter, Shelbie of Livingston, and Ada Marsh Stewartand her husband, Shane of Livingston; a son; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
