Rhoda Marie Chaloupka, 84, of Callaway died Feb. l9, 2003, at HeritageHealth Care Center in Gering.
She was born March 3l, l918, near Callaway to Harry and Anna Chesley.She grew up on the homestead and graduated from Callaway High Schoolin l935. She attended the University of Nebraska and graduated in l939with a Bachelor?s Degree in Home Economics.
She married Paul Fidler in 1941. She was widowed on Dec. 11, 1944,when he was killed in action in the European Theater during World WarII. At the time of his death he was commander of a PT boat and hadreceived a silver star for valor. She received word of his death whileteaching elementary school at Arnold on Dec. 14, 1944. She continuedto teach in Custer County and reside in Custer County near Callaway.
She married Dr. M. L. Chaloupka in Callaway in 1949, and remainedmarried to him until May 7, 1983, when she once again became a widowupon his death. During that marriage, she taught school at CallawayHigh School in 1958 and 1959; she owned and operated the CallawayCourier, a local newspaper, from 1964 to 1971. Her efforts andaccomplishments with the newspaper, and her contributions to the MidPlains Community College in North Platte lead to her receiving theAksarben Award for community service and excellence in 1969. She movedwith Dr. Chaloupka to Broken Bow in 1971 and helped him to berecognized as one of the Good Housekeeping Magazine Family Physiciansof the Year in the U.S. in 1973. She returned to Callaway in 1990 andresided there until her death.
She was active in the Senior Citizens Center, United Methodist Church,and the state Home Economics Board, and supported her community inevery way she could.
Survivors include her son, Robert P. (Judy) of Scottsbluff;grandchildren, Maren L. Chaloupka of Scottsbluff, Kirsten (Paul)Edelbrock of Albuquerque, N.M., and Michael W. Chaloupka of Lincoln; astepson, Larry (Linda) Mowrey of Callaway; a brother, Ole (Donna)Chesley of Callaway; a sister-in-law, Doris Chesley of Callaway; andmuch loved nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Evelyn andCora Longmore; and brothers, Orville and Elgin Chesley.
