"Newport News - 13 Nov--1891
ESHCOL, November 9. - Mr. John Jones died on the 5th inst. at the residence of Charles Heinbach, his son-in-law, in Newport. Mr. Jones was born in Adams county, on January 8th, 1805. His age was 86 years, 9 months and 29 days. He was married to Sarah Myers in 1831. His wife died one year ago from the 16th of September, being the first death that ever occurred in their family. They raised a family of nine children--all girls. Eliza, the oldest, was married to ---Houtz; Mary, married to William Blain; Sarah, married to Joseph Leonard; Margaret, married to Charles Heinbach; Kate,married to Thomas Sunderland; Ellen, married to Joseph Caufman; Sophia, married to Andrew Paden; Susan, married to Peter Long; Jemima, married to George W. Byers. Eight of the children were present at the funeral. Mr. Jones had 51 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He was for many years a member of the Evangelical church and was a good Christian. He was buried on last Sunday, in the Eshcol cemetery. His funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Remer, of Newport, text, from 9th chapter, 5th verse, of Ecclesiastes, viz: "The living know that they must die." The pallbearers were John Fry, Charles Jacobs, Isaiah Campbell and Lewis Long. Mr. Jones was a respected citizen of Tuscarora township for many years. He was of Welch descent on his father's side and German on his mother's side. He taught German school near Roxbury, Franklin county in the winters of 1840 and 1841."
