Samuel WILLIAMS
(Abt 1756 - )
Caverly says: "He came to Rutland, Vt., with his father's family, probably about 1775, and died February 18, 1800. During the quarter ofa century that he lived in Rutland, he was quite prominent in allpublic affiars, occupying the offices of justice, town cler, townrepresentative, member of teh State council, assistant and chief judgeof the county court. His character and ability made him influential inthe public councils; not of extensive reading, but intelligent, publicspirited, cool and discreet, generous, early religious, a deacon inthe church; owner of a large real estate; a member of the Legislaturefrom the age of twenty-seven, almost all the time till his death; thechief founder of Rutland village, his sad, early death, caused byfalling on a knot in a log, in Plymouth, shocked the community. Themile of vehicles that followed his remains home, and the large crowdthat attended his funeral, attested the country's appreciation of itsloss. Judge Samuel Williams, with Rev. Samnel Williams, LL.D., foundedthe Rutland Herald in 1794."
