"Barbara Wicks Brown, age 58, of Davis Creek, California, passed awayon July 21, 1999, after a battle with lung cancer. A memorial servicewill be held on Saturday, July 24, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the FirstChristian Church, 1020 N. Prospect, Porterville. A second memorialservice will be held in Alturas, California, on Saturday, July 31,1999.
She was born in Tulare, California, to Clark and Ruble Wicks, and wasraised in Tulare.
As a child she spent the summers in the mountains - an accomplishedhorseman at an early age. Later, she was active in the PortervilleCanterbelles while attending Tulare Union High School, graduating in1958. Barbara was queen of the Porterville Roundup and Tulare ElksRodeo that same year.
The summer after she graduated she married Adair Brown and moved toPorterville. They owned the Lakeside Trailer Park for a number ofyears and she was a part owner of Buford and Brown Frames prior tomoving to Alturas, California, in 1990. Here she continued to enjoyher love of nature and the outdoors. In Alturas and Davis Creek, sheand Adair raised cattle and alfalfa hay. She was an acative partner inthe day to day operations of the ranches. She was as apt to berounding up cattle, driving a swather or changing sprinklers, as shewas to be cooking, cleaning or redecorating. Barbara raised threechildren, Shelley, Mitch and Sammie and was very involved andsupportive of all their activities. She was a wonderful and lovingfriend, mother and wife.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruble Wicks in 1990. Barbarais survived by her husband of 41 years, Adair Brown of Davis Creek,CA; son Mitch Brown and his wife Elizabeth of Porterville; daughtersShelley Sailors of Davis Creek, California, and Sammie Duysen and herhusband Kent of Porterville; her father, Clark Wicks of Visalia;sister Judi Wicks McGrew and her husband, Michael of Stockton,California; sister-in-law Barbara Brown of Porterville andgrandchildren Seth Sailors, Justing, Lauryn, Taylor and Ryan Brown,Corey and Katie Duysen and four nieces.
Memorial contributions may be made to Tulare County Hospice, 332 N.Johnson Place, Visalia, CA 93291; Vandalia 4-H Club, 11532 Rd. 244,Porterville, CA 93257; or First Christian Church Building Fund, 1020North Prospect, Porterville, CA 93157.
