Sherman Genealogy by Charles Pomeroy Sherman states that John's father passed away in England...His mother remarried to Thomas Rogers...he then came to Watertown, Massachusetts in 1634 with his mother, her second husband (Thomas Rogers) and his half sister Elizabeth Rogers.

Captain John, son of John Sherman, was born in 1604 at Dedham, England. He came to Watertown, Massachusetts, with his father, in 1634. He was made freeman May 17, 1637. He was a land surveyor and a selectman many times from 1637 to 1680. In 1648 he was town clerk, and afterwards representative to the general court in 1651-53-63-82. In 1662 he was steward of Harvard college. In June, 1654, he was made ensign of the Watertown Company, and in 1680 he was made captain. His son Joseph received his land in Watertown. He was with Governor Winthrop when the northern boundary of Massachusetts was surveyed and when the lines were established at Wier's landing, Lake Winnepesaukee. He was an educated man, and was often called upon to manage town affairs. He married Martha, daughter of William and Grace Palmer. He died January 25, 1690-91. His wife died February 7, 1700-1701. No doubt he was actively engaged in preaching in England. Persecuted as a Puritan, John fled with other Shermans and sailed from England in the ”Elizabeth”, arrived in America in 1635 and went to Watertown. He soon moved to New Haven Colony where he was a magistrate several years. He returned to Watertown between 1644 and 1648 and became its third minister a few years before Rev. Mr. Knowles returned to England.

He became a great preacher and controversial figure of New England. He became a freeman in Watertown in 1669, remained in there until his death as their minister. The following is the epitaph honoring him:

“Sacred to the memory of John Sherman a man distinguished for his piety, character and truth; a profound theologian; as a preacher a veritable Chrysostom; unsurpassed in his knowledge of the liberal arts, particularly mathematics; a faithful pastor of the Church of Watertown in New England; an Overseer and Fellow of Harvard College. After a life of faithful service to Christ in the Church for upwards of 45 years, in the fullness of time he passed away and received from Christ the palm of victory. In the 72d year of his age, August 8, 1685”. Rev. JOHN SHERMAN, A. B., Trinity Coll. Camb., 1629, A. M., 1633.
