Jonathan Duff Reed

J. Duff Reed died at his home in Louisville Sunday after a long illness of Bright's disease. Mr. Reed was born at Frankfort, April 7, 1850, and his parents, William D. Reed and Mrs. Jane Maxwell Reed, who was the daughter of Solomon P. Sharp, one of the best known lawyers in Kentucky, removed to O'Bannon Station in his early boyhood. He attended the schools of Louisville and Jefferson County until his fifteenth year when he entered the University of Virginia. Upon his graduation he made his A.M. degree at Edinburgh University and also took a post-graduation course at Munich. The next six years he spent in travel and mastering the French and German languages. He returned to Louisville and graduated from Louisville Law School and spent the next six years practicing in St. Louis. He then came back to Louisville and has since made his home here. He is survived by his widow who was Miss Ella Ferguson of Louisville, J. Duff Reed Jr. of Louisville; three brothers, P. Booker Reed, former Mayor of Louisville, now of Seattle, W. D. Reed, formerly Deputy Circuit Clerk, and S. S. Reed, a farmer of Skylight, Oldham County.
