William Beriah GANO, the son of General Richard Montgomery GANO, graduated from Harvard Law School and became a prominent judge in Dallas. His oldest child, daughter Allene GANO (1883-1922), married Howard Robard HUGHES, Sr., in 1904. They were the parents of Howard Robard HUGHES, Jr. (1905-1976), brilliant aviator, aircraft designer, movie producer, one of the world’s richest men, and later eccentric and recluse.
The Dallas Oakland Cemetery plot in which General Richard GANO and his family members are buried is not far from the cemetery entrance and near to the plot where my great grandfather, Jefferson Davis ROBINSON; my grandfather, Hugh Henry BUMPUS; and other members of their families are buried. The GANO plot contains some rather ornate statuary.
The book, Empire: The Life, Legend, and Madness of Howard HUGHES, by Donald L. Bartlett and James B. Steele. New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 1979, contains considerable information of the GANO family.
