"Mrs. Hayes was perhaps the best loved resident of the city and was an active supporter of every civic and community welfare movement, contributing largely in financial support. Her philanthropies included a gift of $100,000 for Memorial Hospital, completed in 1918, the Mary Miller Hayes School of Nursing home, donation of the home for the Women's clubs, endowment of the Hayes Foundation and endowments for the First Presbyterian Church of Fremont."
