Individual Details
Rollin Birchard DeWitt
(4 Apr 1857 - 14 Jun 1947)
When he was 21 years of age, he left home and did not return. He was at the White House in Washington DC in 1879, to see President and Mrs. Hayes; the President wrote him a letter of recommendation.
"Who do you think settled down upon us about a week ago--Rollin DeWitt--the Shakespearian and Poetry spouter. But that is mean in me to write that. The boy I think fancies himself a poet and a critic on the old Poetry. Don't think him particularly gifted myself; don't know when his visit will end..."
Lucy Webb Hayes to Rutherford P. Hayes, Jan. 31, 1879
