William Wells, (s. of the Rev. William Welles, Prebendary of Norwich Cathedral and rector of St. Peter Mancroft, Norwich, 1598-1620, a scion of the old baronial house of Welles, dating from A. D. 1299,) came to New England c. 1635, and to Southold, L. I., before 1649: d. Southold, 1671; filled many important offices in the Province of New York; by w. Mary had William II., b. 1660, and Joshua, b. 1664, the former of whom m. 1681, Elizabeth Tuthill (dau. John and Deliverance (King) T. from Norfolk, Eng.,) and left 3 s., William III., John and Henry, b. 1760. The third s. m. three times (I. Patience___, II. Dorothy Osman, III. Katharina, widow of John Penny); by 1st mar. had Obadiah, b. 1716, d. 1800, who m., I. 1736, Mary,, dau. of Capt. Cornelius Conkling of East Hampton, L. I., and left one son, Henry Wells, M. D., M. M. S. S., b. 1742, d. 1814, an eminent physician and "nobleman of nature," as he was called by those who knew him well, Princeton 1757, A. M., Yale, 1760, M. D., Dart. 1803. He m. New York, 1764, Hannah, dau. John Stout, of a Dutch family of Barbadoes, W. I., 1679, and New York, 1699. Their 5th s. was Dr. Richard Wells, b. Brattleboro, Vt., June 24, 1774, d. Canandaigua (where he was a physician from 1806), Sept. 12, 1841; M. M. S. S. 1804; M. D., Hobart, 1838.Endnotes
