Individual Details

Myrtle May Birch

(1 May 1887 - 6 Dec 1959)

Myrtle's parentage is uncertain. In her death certificate, Alfred Birch is listed as her father and Mary Duncan is listed as her mother. However, based on her DOB, if Alfred was her father, she would be Rebecca Davidson's daughter, not Mary Ann Duncan's. However she associates strongly with the Duncan surname:
- On all of her children's marriage records.
- On her marriage record she lists Craven Duncan as her father but she is Mary Ann Duncan's father.

In her obituary, she lists the children of Alfred Birch and Mary Ann Duncan as half-siblings, not siblings.

In the 1910 census, instead of living with Alfred Birch and Mary Ann Duncan, she is living with Mary Ann's parents (her supposed grandparents). If she were Alfred's child, it would seem that she would be living in that household.

My speculation is that Myrtle is the illegitimate daughter of Mary Ann Duncan and an unknown father.
