Thomas Herman Griffiths

July 10, 1910 Tommy Griffith took the mound for the New Bedford Massachusetts Whalers against the Lowell Tigers, Tommy in his second season for the Whalers went on to pitch 19 innings and win the game 3 to 2. Tommy in three seasons with the Whalers won 58 games and lost 45. His skill at fielding and batting made him more valuable as an everyday player so the Whalers switched him to playing full time as their right fielder that allowed him to move on to the major leagues. In 1913 he went to the Boston Braves playing RF and batting 2nd in the lineup.
Tommy also had a second career as a vaudeville singer but his partner and teammate Rabbit Maranville quit the singing partnership to become the basketball coach in Springfield Mass.
Throughout his career he was lauded as "one of the fastest players in the field" one time making a headline "He plays the ball off the right field wall better than Casey Stengel"
Tommy went on to Lead the league in games played in 1915 for Cincinnati Reds but was traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers in Feburary of 1919 and missed the Reds win of the World Series of 1919 over the major scandal ridden Chicago White Sox (Black Sox).
During the 1915 season he met and married Dette Louise Bidenharn. They were married 51 years and had 3 daughters.
Thomas Herman Griffith/s died of pneumonia April 13 1967 in Cincinnati and one year later Dette died.
