Rees T. Jones Sr

(10 May 1805 - 11 Apr 1891)

This was written by his Granddaughter Margaret Jones in 1964.
Rees T. and his wife Sarah Williams Jones emigrated to Radnor Township June 7, 1861. Mrs Jones didn't want to leave her homeland as she was the only girl (and three brothers) in her home; two of her brothers were ministers and one a missionary gone to Australia. On the voyage they came through Canada as the United States was having a Civil War, 1861-1864. Thinking they were going to live in a "wilderness" they brought eight large wooden boxes with them, containing clothing, bedding and household goods. They planned to go to Chicago, but since Chicago was not a dairy country they stopped in Radnor, and stayed for awhile in the "Long house" back of the Congregational Church, until they bought 200 acres of land south of the village known as the "Old Warren Place" a large two-story brick house with thirteen rooms. Rees followed farming as in his native land. He paid all in gold for the land.
From this marriage were six children: Mary, who married Evan Jones and lived in Hilliard, Ohio, Thomas W. lived in Gomer, Ohio, David W., Rees W. and Elizabeth (married John A. Price) stayed in the Radnor area. Rees T was a contributor and one of the early deacons of the Radnor Congregational Church. Upon his death his son, Rees W, took the office and on Rees W's death in 1920 his son T. Arthur, filled the vacancy having the Jones family serving the office of Deacon of the Church for one hundred years.
On this farm (the old Warren Place) a large centralized school building was built. The land for the school was bought from Rees W. Jones (son of Rees T) who served on the School Board 26 years. Rees W also served as chorister of the church for forty years.
In 1875 Rees T built a frame house near the school house where Margaret Jones lives (in 1964). Mrs Jones (Elizabeth) was ill with palsy for four years, when she and Rees T along with there son David W and his wife (Mary W. Thomas) moved to the new house.
In the spring of 1891 an epidemic of pneumonia struck the town and David W died on April 9. The morning of David W's Funeral (April 11 1891) Rees T also died making two deaths caused by pneumonia in the same family at the same time. The older folks never ceased talking about the funerals.
Rees W and wife Margaret Thomas had seven children: James R., David V., Arthur, Sarah, Margaret, John W., And Robert E. Three of the family are continuous members of the church: Thomas Arthur, Margaret Alice and Robert Ellsworth.
Another of Rees T's children Elizabeth (wife of John A Price) has a daughter Mary Florence continues as a church member.
