John J was born in Old Town, Badnen Germany. He was the 3rd child of Jacob and Elizabeth Nagel Swickheimer. He first came to Canal Dover, Tuscarwas County Ohio then to Delaware Co about 1860. He was employed by the Thomas Warren Tavern on Marysville Rd (now rt 36) to obtain supplies from Delaware using oxen and cart. Thomas Warren sold the Tavern later to David Bevan. During the Civil War he was a PVT in Co I ov the 54th OVI. He receive the Medal of Honor May 22 1863 in Vicksburg MS. He married Anna Basiger aug 31 1865. They lived 10 years in Missouri and Kansas farming. They came back to Delaware and continued to farm until 1893 when he entered the furniture business in Delaware.
