Col. Thomas Mackay Sprigg PRATHER of "Conegocheaugue"
(26 Feb 1702 - 24 Jul 1785)
From: "Pioneers of Old Monocacy" The Early Settlement of Frederick County, Maryland 1721-1743 by Grace L. Tracey and John P. Dern. This book has quite a bit of info. referring to Thomas, Jr., (also became known as Colonel Thomas Prather in western Maryland). It states he was a surveyor, Constable of Lower Monocacy Hundred in 1738, a Justice of the County Court, an officer with the Maryland Militia and a member of the vestry of All Saint's Church. A few years after 1738, he removed to present-day Washington Co., where he built the Prather homestead near Big Pool, Maryland. In 1760
his home on "Ramble" was in the possession of Elias Delashmutt, who in 1778 devised both it and "Sweed's Folly" to his son Basil with the condition that "during his natural life, he shall not dispose of or even lease it during his life except to one of his brethren or one by the name of Delashmutt". By 1743 in the area north of Point of Rocks where the Nelsons had settled, there were new neighbors, including Thomas Prather, Notley Thomas, James and John Hook, the Lakins and the Fees. Thomas Prather, Jr. was one of the most active men in the business affairs of Western Maryland.
