He fought for Thomas, Earl of Lancaster during his failed rebellion against Edward II and was one of the knights taken prisoner at the battle of Boroughbridge in 1322. As a result, his estates were forfeited to the Crown, but he was able to secure a pardon and the return of his lands after paying a #100 fine.
