William Marshall was waylaid and slain by his brother-in-law Thomas Colter and his brother-in-laws 16 year old son Levi. This same pair killed William Marshall Prathers brother Henry. They were later caught and jailed, but the 'Home Guard' (civil war) took them from jail and hanged Thomas Colter but spared his young son due to his age and pleas from the jailer and his wife.
