Individual Details
James Sylas "Cyrus" PRATER
(6 Jan 1836 - 18 Jan 1908)
The 1900 Census for Bouleware Twp., Gasconade Co., MO indicates both his parents were born in Scotland, so he could well not be related to the main Prater/Prather line. -- rj
Said to be the son of Thomas James Prater and Rebecca Holman, but I don't see how it fits -- there is already a James and a Silas, plus someone else born too close in 1836. -- Tamara Owens
I feel strongly that my Cyrus J. Prater is NOT the child of Rebecca Holman/Helman and her husband Thomas J. Prather BECAUSE the dates just do not work and he never was in California. -- Barbara Doshi
I did have one interesting comment from a direct descendant: "What I hear, Cyrus Prater was very mysterious. Take a look at the names of his and Virginia's children. Was he hooked on the James gang or what? Story was that he had an alias of Jim Cummins. He rode with the James Gang and also was running with the renegades after the war. I looked up this Jim Cummins, and he was in a nursing home after Cyrus died, and he also wrote a book with his picture on the inside cover. It wasn't Cyrus." "Also, Cyrus was supposed to have robbed a train right before his marriage to Virginia, and sent her some crystal wine goblets. These glasses were given to Bill's mom, along with a letter from Cyrus." -- Clifford Ocheltree
His dates may be confused with those of James Sylas "Cyrus" Prater (20290).
