Some family histories show him as the son of Archelus, but Archelus would have had to have been 60 when William was born, which is not impossible, but improbable. So, evidently there is a missing generation, and Bob Prater makes a convincing case that he is the son of Martin.

Also, the Archelaus Prater's 1830 Warren County, Tennessee census there was no child in the 0-5 year old age. In that census, Archelaus had two sons 10-15. One of them was Thomas M. born c. 1817 and Benjamin P. born c. 1819. In Archelaus' 1840 Warren County, Tennessee census there was no child 10-15 years of age. there's one 5-10 years old and he may be the James Prater living in Archelaus' household in 1850 age 17 years. There's one in the 1840 census 0-5 years old but that is a son Benjamin (Archelaus' son) named William. William was born 1840. In William C. Prater's 1880 census, the census shows William's father and mother born in Tennessee. That does not fit for Archelaus. But that does fit for Martin L. Prater. -- Bob Prater
