From gravestone.Military
William joined the Army on June 10, 1942 at Camp Shelby, MS. He would serve with the 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division throughout the war. The 313th received credit for their participation in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe Campaigns as well as receiving the French Croix de Guerre with Palm for three separate actions. William is not listed in the unit history of the 607th Tank Destroyer Battalion so it is safe to say that he only transferred into the unit after hostilities had ceased. It may be just a coincidence but the 607th ended their wartime service near the Czechoslovakian border while the 313th Regiment was located in Czechoslovakia as of August of 1945.Death
