RESIDENCES: 1860 census: age 20, a laborer, lived in the household of William Moore in Deer Creek Twp., Cass County, Indiana. William Moore was a lumber dealer, age 27, born in Clermont County, Ohio. After Allen's family had died in Ohio he was bound to this man for care in return for work but Allen got little care and performed lots of work. He left and went to live with Nancy Baldwin until he went to the Civil War. Then lived in Pierre, South Dakota, ran a hotel and usually worked in sawmills. Returned to Ohio and then Young America, Indiana,
probably met wife there and raised children, then moved to Washington Twp., Grant Co., Indiana. Lived in Galveston, Indiana (Washington and California Streets) around 1902. (From handwritten autobiographies of Melville and Margaret Phillips.)
MILITARY SERVICE: Mounted infantry in Civil War, Private and Corporal in Co. D, 8th Regiment, 39th Indiana Mounted Infantry (cavalry) enlisted 29 August 1861, discharged 29 July 1865, fought with Sherman. Was a member of the Dan Pratt Post No. 50, Department of Indiana, G.A.R.
DEATH: Died in the soldiers home in Marion, Indiana.
