Occupations: Worked in silk mill as child. 1766-1773 sea captain then farmer in Loudoun Co., Virginia. Hampshire Co., Virginia. 5 May 1788 bought 133 acres on south fork of Patterson Creek.
Military: Revolutionary War soldier, Captain Thomas Berry's Company, Virginia 8th regiment 1776-77(Enlisted December 15, 1776, discharged September 16, 1777). McDonald's regiment in Lord Dunmore's War 1774-75.
Residences: Came to America about 1773. Hampshire Co., Virginia (later Hardy Co., then Grant Co., West Virginia) Owned 230 acres on Patterson Creek, Hardy Co., Virginia, later Grant County, West Virginia (southeast of Lahmansville, West Virginia). John took younger males to White Women, Coshocton Co., Ohio in 1807 (in 1811 poll tax list of New Castle Twp., Coshocton Co., Ohio), and then Highland Twp. (just west of Bloomfield), Muskingum, Ohio in 1815 where four older sons had already settled. 1820 in Highland Twp., Muskingum, Ohio (listed as John, Jr. in 1820 census)(also listed as age 26-45 instead of 45 plus).
