Elmer Smith joined the Navy in 1935, and served in Pearl Harbor from 1939 to 1945. He heard banging on the hull of the USS Oklahoma after the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, and Elmer was able to get the Seabees to rescue the men trapped inside the USS Oklahoma. He studied mechanical engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo after World War II.
