Oscar Schindel was a doctor in Hagerstown, Clear Spring and Cumberland, Maryland and, later, in Kansas City. He attended Mercersburg College for two years, and then studied medicine under Dr. N. B. Scott of Hagerstown. In 1871, Oscar graduated from the University of Maryland. In 1873, he gained his medical degree from the University of Maryland. He belonged to the Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Cumberland, and was a Democrat.
